Laxative vitamin bomb
Many people think that the kiwi comes from New Zealand. But when the kiwi was not yet called a kiwi, but Chinese gooseberry and later Yang Tao (or sweet peach), the kiwi was only found in China.
It was not until the beginning of the last century that New Zealand missionaries took seeds back to their homeland. At first it was given the name Chinese gooseberry, but growers later named it after the kiwi bird, which is also brown and round.
Packed with vitamins
A kiwi is healthy, super healthy even. Kiwis are rich in vitamins C, B and E. Because of the high amount of vitamin C, eating a kiwi contributes to a good resistance. Green kiwis contain even more vitamin C than one orange or three lemons. In addition, kiwis are very high in fiber and that fiber is, as you may already know, good for your digestion.
But not only because of the fiber kiwis have a laxative effect, also because they contain a protein-degrading enzyme – actinidin. This enzyme ensures that the body digests proteins. Kiwi is the only fruit that contains this enzyme. Because of this substance, it is better not to eat kiwi in combination with dairy products. As soon as you add kiwi to protein-rich products, they start to break down or curdle.
Low in calories
For people who are on a diet, the kiwi is a must. They contain few calories. Only 57 kilocalories per 100 grams. Kiwi is also rich in antioxidants, such as vitamin C and polyphenol. Antioxidants protect the human body against harmful substances, the so-called free radicals.
yellow kiwi
In addition to the green kiwi, there is also a yellow kiwi. This one hasn’t been around for very long. The first yellow kiwi was only available in European stores in 2000. After years (23!) of experimentation and optimization, the growers were satisfied with the result. And rightly so, because many people find it even tastier than the green variety.
Peel
Did you know that you can eat the skin of a kiwi whole? It may not sound very appealing, but the skin contains a lot of fiber. If you brush the hairs from the peel and wash the kiwi, it will taste better.
save
You can keep a kiwi in the refrigerator for about two weeks after purchase. Do you want to eat it faster and is it not very ripe yet? Then it is best to place it with other types of fruit on the fruit bowl. This speeds up the ripening process. The green kiwi is harder and has a slightly longer shelf life than the yellow kiwi.
Freezing
Did you know that you can also freeze a kiwi very well? After thawing, it is better not to eat them as is, but to use them to make a smoothie or dessert.
