Be careful what you put in your mouth
You watch your weight very carefully. So you also pay attention to what you eat: pure, unprocessed, fresh and natural products. Also for in between! If you eat like this, you don’t actually have to pay attention to calories. Lucky, right? That does not mean that you sometimes have to be careful with what you put in your mouth. Because these healthy snacks contain an amazing amount of calories.
1. Smoothie
Sounds healthy, such a drink full of fruit. A smoothie certainly has advantages, because it is made from the whole fruit and therefore also contains the fibers and vitamins. But… the portion of a smoothie can quickly become too large, especially because it contains more than one portion of fruit. And then you get a lot of fast sugars and calories.
For example, do you drink a smoothie of a banana, an orange, half a mango and some strawberries? Delicious, but that is more than 300 kilocalories and 60 grams of (fruit) sugars.
2. Nuts
Nuts are very healthy, they are therefore recommended daily by the Health Council and the Nutrition Center. Unsaturated fats, proteins, fibres, vitamins, minerals: everything is in it! But they are also high in calories. So the trick is to stick to one handful of nuts (about 160 kilocalories) and not mindlessly empty a bag of nuts as a snack.
3. Extra dark chocolate
Extra dark chocolate contains hardly any sugar and is rich in the antioxidants that give chocolate such a healthy image. Fortunately, the eating factor of dark chocolate is a lot lower than that of milk chocolate, but you should not think that this chocolate is completely harmless. A piece of extra dark chocolate of 25 grams provides you 160 kilocalories.
4. ‘Sugar-free’ pie or brownie
A cup of coffee in that hip café, where they only sell sugar-free and/or gluten-free cakes and brownies. Sounds good! Something to have with your coffee without any worries, right? But sugar-free cakes and brownies do contain ingredients such as dates, almond flour, coconut blossom sugar, extra dark chocolate, avocado or coconut oil. All in all, this so-called ‘healthy’ pastry sometimes provides two to three times as many calories as such an old-fashioned moorkop.
5. Dried Fruit
Sounds like healthy snacking, dried fruit. Raisins, apricots, plums and dates for example. But actually, dried fruit is not such a healthy candy at all, because it is so rich in sugar. It is better than candy though, because dried fruit still contains some fiber. But don’t fool yourself into thinking that this is sugar free.
6. Latte
A café latte or a chai latte sounds like an innocent drink in between. But beware, a latte often contains a large cup of whole milk and often extra sweet seasonings have been added. Nothing wrong with milk by the way, but don’t think this is a calorie-free choice.
A caffè latte from the well-known American coffee chain contains 170 kilocalories, a vanilla latte contains 250 kilocalories and a chai latte contains 240 kilocalories.
