In 2022, the Renault 5 celebrates its 50th anniversary. After Rétromobile, it’s the turn of the Salon de Lyon to honor the city car. With the difference that these are not models made available by the diamond manufacturer. All the cars presented are from private collections.
The Renault 5 never stops celebrating its fiftieth anniversary! And it’s not over, since the year has only just begun… After a major exhibition organized at Retromobile by Renault, the R5 is back in a living room. This time, she is exhibiting in Lyon. As part of the local automotive event, which runs until April 11, 2022, the organizers have set up a beautiful space to accommodate nearly twenty models. These do not come from the diamond manufacturer’s collections. They were selected by the organizers of Epoqu’auto, the Lyon show dedicated to old cars. All the models on display, in an impeccable state of preservation, therefore come from private collections.

From launch versions to sports…
So that visitors can discover the history of the R5 as well as possible, the Epoqu’auto teams have selected an eclectic line-up. There are of course the versions marketed at launch – in 1972 – headlining the L and TL. Moreover, the latter is one of the rare examples to display the famous forbidden rhombus ! There are of course also the most sporty series versions: R5 Alpine, R5 Alpine Turbo, Turbo and Turbo 2. To go even further, the volunteers at the show dedicated to oldtimers also brought in:
- a Renault 5 Alpine Group 2 Calberson with which Jean Ragnotti drove
- a Renault 5 TS Monte-Carlo, a special series celebrating the Frenchman’s exploits in rallying
- a Renault 5 Alpine Coupe, specially developed to take part in the Alpine Cups.
… including exotic R5s!
Finally, the story of the Renault 5 would not be completely complete without the presence of some exotic models starting with the “Le Car”, the American version of the city car. It is easily recognizable since it does not adopt the same bumpers as our model, nor the same front face. The headlights, for example, are recessed into their housing. Other original variations are to be admired such as the R5 LM4 Sovra, sort of mix between a pick-up and a convertible of which only 17 copies remain!
