The Fietsersbond is committed to allowing cyclists to cycle safely and pleasantly through the Netherlands. This does not only mean the bike rides to and from work or school, but also in the early morning or late evening. The Fietsersbond has a Bicycle Vision for 2040 that reads: everyone in the Netherlands also dares to cycle day and night. Read more in this blog about how the Fietsersbond is committed to achieving the Bicycle Vision for 2040.
Making safety measurable
In the ‘bicycle world’, little is currently known about safe and pleasant cycling in the dark. The main reason for this is that the focus is mainly on road safety aspects. In addition, subjective safety is also difficult to measure. The Fietsersbond wants more insight into cyclists’ perception of safety. Especially in the early morning or late evening. Only in this way can the Bicycle Vision for 2040 be achieved.

bike line
This year – in mid-November – the Fietsersbond is organizing the so-called Meefietslijn. This takes place at three locations in the Netherlands, together with local departments. The Meefietslijn was organized for the first time in 2020. From Vaartsche Rijn station towards the Hoograven and Lunetten in Utrecht, there were a number of routes that were experienced as unsafe by various cyclists. The conversation was started on the bicycle about cycling in the dark. Thanks to these conversations, stories and experiences have been collected.
Night bike net
In almost every municipality in the Netherlands, a main bicycle network is included in their policy and implementation plans. It is quite possible to also develop a night bike network. Municipalities can go to popular places in the city where there are many activities in the evening and connect them with different residential areas. The municipality of Zoetermeer has already developed a Night Net Bicycle. With this, this municipality has a won a prize in 2022 for the best Large Bicycle Municipality.
Provide good lighting on your bike
One of the most important tips for cycling safely from point A to point B is to have good lighting on your bike. With good lighting, not only can other road users see you well on the road, but you can also better see danger coming during your ride.
With the AXA Greenline 1-Led you always have working lighting in your pocket. This rear light has a rechargeable battery. The battery life is 4 hours. The AXA Greenline 30 lux usb is a front light, which also has a rechargeable battery. The battery life is 5 hours.
