The living environment plays a role in the health of individuals, according to the results of a study published in the medical journal Scientific Reports. The more beautiful, atypical or picturesque the environment, the better the inhabitants feel.
The beauty of our daily surroundings may be of more practical importance than we realize and affect people’s health and well-being. Researchers at Warwick Business School (UK) carried out a study to understand whether theenvironment and living environment had an impact on health. To do this, they rated the health (very good, good, average, bad or very bad) of individuals surveyed in 2011 according to the “beauty” of the place where they lived.
The conclusions of their study showed that individuals who live in a beautiful or atypical environment and living environment show better health. The beauty of the places was not necessarily linked to the green spaces. Urban and suburban areas could be considered as a living environment conducive to good health.
Develop beautiful or atypical environments
Of course, other factors come into play. “We also checked for socio-economic characteristics that may influence health, such as income and employment. ‘air’ explains Chanuki Seresinhe, PhD in behavioral science at the University of Warwick.
“After taking all of these parameters into consideration in the analysis, we find that people in England report better health when they live in spectacularly beautiful places.”
“This discovery is fascinating. A space is not beneficial to our health simply because it is green. It would seem that it is the beauty of the environment in question, measured by its picturesque dimension, which is of crucial importance” , explains Chanuki Seresinhe.
