In France, in 2020, around 3.5 million people suffered from diabetes; in 90% of cases, it was type 2 diabetes (T2D). This chronic pathology occurs in particular when the diet is poorly balanced and physical activity is insufficient.
Exercising on a regular basis therefore constitutes a good defense against type 2 diabetes. And according to a new study carried out by Harvard University (in the United States), two times during the day should be favored when exercising. strives to prevent the onset of the disease.
American researchers followed a group of 93,095 people, non-diabetic adults aged 62 on average; They wore a connected bracelet for 1 week in order to precisely quantify their physical activity. At the end of the experiment, the scientists analyzed the data collected to estimate each volunteer’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Exercise before 6 p.m. to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes
Result ? Harvard researchers observed that people who played sports in the morning (between 6 a.m. and noon) And in the afternoon (between noon and 6 p.m.) had on average a 10% lower risk than others of developing the disease. On the other hand, when physical activity was practiced in the evening (after 6 p.m.), it did not seem to have an impact on the risk of diabetes.
The scientists add that in addition to the time of day, the intensity of physical activity also had to be taken into account (to reduce the risk of diabetes, it had to be at least “moderate” : in short, we can talk during sport but we sweat). Furthermore, unsurprisingly, the longer the sports session, the greater the impact on the risk of developing T2D.
