The deputies have definitively adopted an ecological bill restricting the manufacture and the sale of products containing per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances, which are dangerous for health and the environment.
- Parliament has definitively adopted a bill to prohibit the manufacture, import and sale of certain products containing PFAS.
- As of January 1, 2026, the products concerned by this text will be those of Fart (for skis), cosmetics and clothing textiles containing PFAS, with the exception of certain industrial textiles or “necessary for essential uses.”
- Cooking utensils, such as non -stick stoves, were excluded from the field of ban.
France, “One of the countries with the most ambitious legislation on eternal pollutants”, According to the environmental deputy Nicolas Thierry. This February 20, the Parliament adopted a billvoted for the first time in the National Assembly and modified by the Senate, aimed at protecting the population from the risks linked to per- and polyfluoroalky (PFAS) substances. In detail, this text, carried by environmentalists, was approved by 231 parliamentarians and 51 deputies voted against.
Cancers, liver diseases, fertility problems: PFAS have “deleterious effects for humans”
As a reminder, this wide family of more than 4,000 chemical compounds has been used, since the 1950s, in several products of everyday life: textiles, food packaging, anti-firmed foam, refrigerant gas, non-stick coatings, cosmetics, medical devices, products phytopharmaceutical. Non-stick, waterproofing and high-heat resistant, per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances are toxic for both biodiversity, accumulating in soils, air or water, and human beings, because they are extremely persistent in the environment and the body.
“Scientific work on certain known PFASs show that they can have deleterious effects for humans: increase in cholesterol levels, cancers, effects on fertility and development of the fetus, on the liver, on the kidneys, etc. . as ‘carcinogenic for humans’ (group 1) and pfos as ‘perhaps carcinogenic for humans’ (group 2b) “noted ANSES. The European Environment Agency (European Environment Agency) also evokes high risks of obesity.
PFAS: Kitchen utensils are ultimately not affected by the ban
Concretely, with this law, from January 1, 2026, manufacturing, imports, exports and marketing on consideration or free will be prohibited for products:
- Cosmetics containing treacherous substances and polyfluoroalkylas;
- Of Fart (for skis) containing perfluoroalkylas and polyfluoroalkylakyls;
- Clothing textiles, “Any shoe and all waterproofing agents of textile clothing and shoes products for consumers containing perfluoroalkylated and polyfluoroalkylated substances, with the exception of clothing textiles and shoes that are designed for the protection and safety of people, especially in the accomplishment of national defense or civil security missions “ Or “necessary for essential uses”.
However, kitchen utensils, such as stoves with a non-stick coating, are excluded from the ban, after a strong mobilization of industrialists in the sector.
Another measure: an obligation to control in waters intended for human consumption the presence of treacherous substances and polyfluoroalkylas. Industrialists who make or massively use PFASs must contribute to finance the depollution of water. This polluter payster will be 100 euros per 100 g of “eternal pollutants” rejected.
