The overall well-being index of the French is down at the end of 2020, mainly due to confinements and deprivations of liberty.
- “Containment” (53 quotes), “Covid” (40) “sad” (26) “crappy” (16), “stress” (18) and “depressed” (17) are the words that the French spontaneously associate the most to 2020.
- The overall well-being index of the French, which is established on a scale of 0 to 100, fell to 55.5 in 2020, a drop of -2 compared to 2019 (57.5).
According to the Odoxa – Dentsu Consulting Political Barometer for December, the words “confinement” (53 quotes), “Covid” (40), “sad” (26), “crappy” (16), “stress” (18) and “depressed” (17) are the ones that the French spontaneously associate the most with 2020. The French also want to review their “family”, this word coming in 3rd position of the words most cited by our fellow citizens.
A year 2020 considered horrible because of the deprivation of freedoms
“Overall, it appears that the French have had a year 2020 which they consider horrible, mainly because of the confinements and the deprivation of freedoms, more than because of the virus and its dangers for health”, analyzes Gaël Sliman, president of Odoxa. “The French also place freedom as their main hope for the year 2021, well before the anti-covid-19 vaccine, which does not bode well for the future vaccination campaign. Moreover, I think that new restrictive measures will not be as well tolerated as the first ones. The French have missed their freedom terribly in 2020, and they will probably not/no longer put up with the bullying next year that they have accepted this year”, adds Gael Sliman.
And it’s true that the year ends rather badly for the French in terms of the well-being of the French. The overall index, which is established on a scale of 0 to 100, fell to 55.5 in 2020, a drop of -2 compared to 2019 (57.5), according to another survey carried out by OpinionWay and the Solidaris institute for the mutual MGEN. The morale of women (-53.3) is at the lowest level for 5 years, compared to -58 for men (in 2019, the drop in the overall index affected both sexes).
“Women suffer more than men, and express a more vivid perception of injustices, problems, inequalities than men. They say they are more worried and stressed, for themselves, for their children, for their loved ones, they find more than men that everything deteriorates for them. They experience more discrimination, they are the target of inequalities”, analyzes Michel Wieviorka, director of studies at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales.
40/59 year olds are not doing well

The figures in the private sphere are collapsing in 2020. 63.2% of French people are satisfied with their love or sentimental life (-7 points in one year), including 68% of women and 58% of men. 21.2% of French people are afraid of being left by their spouse (+9 points in 5 years). 27.7% of French people have already been confronted with problems of violence in their close circle/family, including 31% of women and 24% of men (+7 points in 1 year). 68.5% of French people have real friends to lean on (-14 points in 3 years). Finally, 62.3% of French people have good neighborly relations (-6 points in 1 year).
The balance between private life and professional life continues to decline in one year: 60.7% of French people manage to reconcile the two compared to 63% in 2019. And 56.8% of French people believe they do not have enough time for their life. personal outside of work, compared to 49.8% in 2019.
