What if a few adjustments in our simple eating habits lead to weight loss? According to a study carried out by researchers at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, shifting the time of day for breakfast and dinner can reduce calorie intake and at the same time lose fat.
The team of researchers, led by the Dr Jonathan Johnston, compared the results observed on 13 participants, divided into two distinct groups. In the first group, they had to have their breakfast 90 minutes later than usual and on the contrary, advance the dinner time by 90 minutes. The second group ate at their usual times.
Less appetite, less desire to snack
Unlike the other studies on the same topic, the participants could all eat what they wanted, within a certain limit. The study spanned 10 weeks, with participants having regular blood tests. At the end of this time, they answered a questionnaire.
As a result, people who changed their eating habits ate less than those who kept the same meal times. 57% of them noticed a decrease in their appetite as well as their tendency to snack, especially in the evening.
“Even though this study is small in scale, it makes us realize that small changes in when we eat our meals can have a beneficial effect on our bodies,” Dr. Johnston said in the statement. “Decreasing your fat mass reduces the risk of obesity and related diseases, so it is essential to improve our health,” he adds.
The researchers hope to confirm these results with a new study, on a larger scale this time.
