It cannot be repeated enough how great fruits and vegetables are for your health. American researchers have just shown that they also make it possible to take care of our arteries.
Reduce the risk of developing arterial disease
According to a study conducted by a team of researchers from the New York University School of Medicine, eating three servings of fruits and vegetables per day would reduce the risk of developing peripheral arterial disease (PAD). These diseases can affect the aorta or some of its branches, such as the renal arteries and the arteries of the lower extremities.
To reach these conclusions, published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, one of the journals of the American Cardiovascular Association, the researchers sifted through the health data of nearly 3.7 million people. 6% of them suffered from peripheral arterial disease and 30% said they ate 3 fruits and vegetables, at least, every day.
Healthy living and good eating habits
They were able to observe that the people who ate the most fruits and vegetables were white, middle-aged women who engaged in regular physical activity and who also regularly consumed nuts, fish and red meat. . Compared with those who ate fruits and vegetables less than once a month, these women reduced their risk of suffering from PAD by 18%.
The authors of this work also found that smoking and diabetes, as well as hypertension and high cholesterol, were important risk factors for peripheral arterial disease. But don’t let that discourage us, a supply of fruits and vegetables will always be beneficial for the arteries and for the heart, whatever our age, our sex or our origin.
