Five useful tips
Running is a smart, healthy and inexpensive way to maintain your fitness. But what if you can’t commit? Here are five tips that will make running a fun, enjoyable experience.
1. Reward yourself
Of course you don’t reward yourself with chips or a tasty bar of chocolate, but treat yourself with something that stimulates training. For example, think of:
- a massage
- new sports shoes
- an mp3 player to listen to music while running
- a healthy salad
2. Be realistic
Don’t expect yourself to be able to run a marathon right away. Set realistic goals and look at factors other than distance. For instance:
- Improve your technique.
- Watch your body and rest when stabbing your side.
- Strengthen your muscles with strength training.
3. Keep a journal
Write down all the days you run; with your times, distances and feelings. It’s nice to see your progress after a while. You will discover an upward trend and think: I’m not doing it for nothing!
4. Let yourself be supported
Ask a friend, your trainer, your GP or the neighbor to support you. It is motivating when someone is just as enthusiastic as you.
5. Be prepared
Always have your things ready so you can’t come up with excuses. Dirty workout clothes or bad shoes can be an excuse to sit on the couch.
