Extra tax on sugar – agree or disagree?
There will be no additional tax on sugar, or sugar tax. The leaked National Prevention Agreement prefers to encourage low-calorie soft drinks through tax reduction. A missed opportunity?
Sugar tax is a good idea!
We eat too much sugar together, which is bad for our health. Several studies have shown that sugar tax works. In England it was therefore introduced on soft drinks. People buy less sugar-rich products if there is an extra tax on them. Less soft drinks, juice, biscuits and sweets in the shopping cart. Sugar tax thus ensures lower blood sugar levels, less diabetes and slimmer waistlines. We will all spend less money = on healthcare. And besides: a pack of cigarettes also has an extra tax, to discourage smoking.
No do not do that!
Like VAT, this tax is not dependent on your income. Everyone pays the same. This makes a sugar-rich product relatively more expensive for people with a narrow wallet. It is also questionable whether the government is allowed to determine what people throw in the supermarket trolley. Surely you can know that yourself. In addition: fruit and vegetables have received a VAT increase, something should be done about that sooner.
