Certain disorders oferection are associated with the use of condoms. However, the link between condoms and erectile dysfunction is not clearly identified. Does the condom reveal more generalized erection problems or does it alone cause erection difficulties?
To find out, British, American and Canadian researchers conducted a study on 479 heterosexual men aged 18 to 24 who had used condoms. Recruited online, participants completed the IIEF-5 test, the international index of erectile function. They also answered questionnaires to find out the frequency of their erection loss when putting on a condom or having sex in the past 90 days. In order not to bias the data, the sexual experience and health of each of the participants were taken into account.
In the end, 38.4% of the participants were classified in the group having no erectile disorders related to the condom. 13.8% of the participants said they had erectile difficulties when using a condom, and 15.7% said they suffered from these problems when having sex with a condom. 32.2% of participants reported erectile dysfunction in these two situations.
However, men reporting an erection problem related to the condom also reported erectile difficulties during unprotected sex. The latter also had a lower measure of erectile function than the others.
Clearly, this study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine points out that men with condom-related erectile problems may have more generalized erectile dysfunction. Finally, the study points out that more than a third of the participants never really learned how to put on a condom correctly, which does not facilitate a good erection. The authors advise doctors to ask their patients about their erectile dysfunction linked to the condom and, if necessary, explain to them how to put it on or refer them to psychosexual therapy.
