Recent scientific research has shown that electric bicycles are good for health. Good news for the growing group of people who opt for the e-bike.
It is becoming increasingly clear that the electric bicycle is an excellent means of getting more people moving – especially people who normally do not cycle (anymore). Scientists from the University of Colorado recently conducted research into the health aspects of the e-bike and the results show significant health benefits.
Three times a week
A group of twenty people took part in the study, people who go to work every day by car and who do not exercise. Before the actual examination, their blood values and condition were measured. For a month, the group rode an e-bike to work at least three days a week, equipped with a GPS tracker and a heart rate monitor. Their average speed was found to be 20.1 kilometers and at the end of the test month, the scientists saw significant improvements in cardiovascular health, oxygen uptake and blood sugar levels.
Good for heart and blood vessels
The conclusion of the study is clear: ‘Electric bicycles are an efficient form of active transport that can improve the risk factors for cardiovascular disease in just four weeks.’ James Peterman, a researcher at the university and one of the lead authors, adds that the e-bike can help people build physical activity into their day without having to set aside extra time for it.
The study appeared in the European Journal of Applied Physiology.
