Porsche just does it! The 4.0 from the 911 GT3 in the Cayman
There is one thing you should never do as a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 owner. And that is stepping into a 911 GT3. Because although both Porsches have a naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine with the same engine capacity, that of the 911 is so violent and raw that it seems a bit tame in the GT4 – when it really isn’t. Fortunately for the people who have stepped from a GT4 into a GT3, there is a remedy. This is the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS – a Cayman with the engine from the 911 GT3.
Without driving a meter, we can already promise you that this has to be one of the most fun cars to drive ever. The GT3 engine is one of the best engines ever made and now it’s in a smaller and lighter car. With a primal cry, this six-cylinder climbs to 9,000 rpm to produce 500 horsepower on the road. That’s just 10 horsepower less than the 911 GT3. The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS also weighs slightly less, making it faster than the GT3. This also bodes well for the upcoming 911 GT3 RS.
Specifications Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS
The 4.0-liter six-cylinder without turbos thus produces 500 hp and 450 Nm. That is 80 hp more than the normal GT4. The 0-100 time is 3.4 seconds thanks to a PDK automatic. A manual gearbox is not possible. The top speed is 315 km/h. This must be an experience, so low to the ground.
More important than the sprint and top speeds is the cornering behavior of this Cayman. For better handling, Porsche re-adjusted the chassis. The Cayman 718 GT4 RS is 30 millimeters lower than the normal Cayman. In addition, there are spoilers, lips, diffusers and so on. In track mode, the GT4 RS generates about 25 percent more downforce than the GT4. Then there’s a Weissach package with extra carbon fiber, titanium exhausts and a roll cage.
less weight
By applying carbon fiber for, for example, the front cover and the fenders, Porsche managed to cut 35 kilos. The total weight including a full fuel tank is 1,415 kilos. For example, the rear window is made of lightweight glass and there is less damping material. The door handles have been replaced with loops – for those last few ounces, but mostly because it looks cool. A cool detail is the carbon fiber air scoop that you see from the side. This supplies the engine with fresh air. Earlier we saw something like this on Singer’s DLS.
Fast on the Nürburgring
The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS already set a blistering time on the Nürburgring of 7 minutes and 4.511 seconds. That is 23 seconds faster than the normal GT4. We are curious what else Manthey-Racing can squeeze out of this GT4. The price of the new Cayman GT4 RS has now been announced. You can take one home for a minimum of 222,000 euros.
