During a public session on the Nürbrugring, the driver of a Toyota GR Yaris did not let go of the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 which preceded him, yet much more powerful. The technical sheet is not everything, as our in-house pilot often proves.
Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Cayman? Obviously not the Toyota GR Yaris of the enthusiast of circuit outings by the name of Great Motors on Youtube. During a lap on the famous Nordschleife (north loop) of the Nürburgring filmed with an on-board camera, he followed from start to finish a much more powerful Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 than his own car.
An unbalanced match?
The Toyota GR Yaris, powered by a three-cylinder 1.6 l turbo sending 261 hp and 360 Nm of torque to the four wheels, weighs 1,270 kg at least empty. The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 is powered by a 4.0 l atmospheric central rear flat-six transmitting 420 hp and 420 Nm to the rear wheels for a minimum weight of 1,495 kg empty. With weight-to-power ratios of 4.87 kg/hp versus 3.56 kg/hp respectively, theGermany has a clear advantage on paper. And yet…
A “porschist” little fair play
In real-world conditions, many factors affect performance. We can cite the tires used, their condition, the temperature of the brakes or the wear of the shock absorbers. But the driver’s skills, experience and knowledge of the track are just as crucial. In this case, it is clear that the GR Yaris holds a higher pace than the 718 that precedes it. On several occasions, the Japanese city car found itself very close to the rear bumper of the German coupe, prompting its driver to indicate his wish to overtake with his turn signals.

In this case, the rules of good conduct and safety must encourage the slowest driver to allow himself to be overtaken. It is not a race but a hobby, everyone being free to ride at the pace they want. However, here, the driver of the Porsche refuses to pull over.
