Does the Nürburgring video here reveal anything about the engine?
Porsche has been using a clever strategy for some time now. Even before they reveal a new car or new version, they put it on the Nürburgring and first tell the lap time. The reveal of the car will come later. This is also the case with this new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS, the most extreme version of the Cayman at the moment. The specifications will remain a secret for a while, but know that the lap time is 7 minutes and 4.511 seconds. That’s a very impressive 23.6 seconds faster than the normal GT4.
What engine is in the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS?
That is of course the question. The normal GT4 uses a bored-out version of the 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine from the 911, with the turbos removed. That motor makes a maximum of 8,000 revolutions per minute. Although Porsche doesn’t say anything, we see the engine making a whopping 9,000 rpm in the Nürburgring video below. That could mean that Porsche has thoroughly overhauled the existing engine of the Cayman GT4, or…
The engine of the 911 GT3 in the Cayman
There are rumors that the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS uses the engine of the Porsche 911 GT3. This engine is also 4.0 liters in size, but produces 510 hp instead of 420 hp. That’s a nice bonus, but the biggest difference is the character of the engine. The six-cylinder from the GT3 is much rawer and has a primal cry that hits you to the bone. The engine from the 911 GT3 (probably with slightly less power) in the Cayman GT4 must almost provide an overdose of serotonin for the driver.
Next month, Porsche will reveal which engine they eventually put in the GT4 RS. It is also the first time that they make an RS version of the Cayman. There was always a GT4 Clubsport, but it was only for the track. The driver who put down the Ringtijd calls it ‘one of the sharpest steering cars that Porsche has ever developed’. We are curious if he will also come with a manual gearbox.
