No more simple advice over the counter after the vaccine production in certain regions, the profession of pharmacist is evolving once again in order to be able to do more health and less commerce. Decide during the conventional negotiations of 2017, pharmacists can, since March 16, carry out medication reviews. What does it consist of ?
For seniors only
The medication review is intended for people over the age of 65 with severe long-lasting affection (Parkinson’s, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, paraplegia …), and to people over 75 years “for whom at least five molecules or active ingredients are prescribed”, specifies the order published in Official newspaper.
This assessment consists of talking with the patient in order to know the treatments he is taking, his lifestyle, how he is, etc. The goal is to see if there are no dangerous interactions between the drugs, if the patient is taking them correctly and if they have no side effects on his health (especially on the kidneys and liver that tire with age). Following this, the pharmacist consults the shared medical record of the patient (procedure which will be generalized next fall) and can perform a pharmacological analysis. Thus, the elderly benefit from regular monitoring, close to home.
A paid service
The medication review is not a discovery for pharmacists since they already practice it on asthma patients or under anti coagulants. For this new service, they will be paid 60 euros for the first assessment and then 20 for the following ones. If the patient’s treatment is changed, this will drop to 30 euros. Health Insurance covers this service for patients.
