Since November 2022, pharmacists can administer any type of vaccine and booster dose to people who come to the pharmacy with a medical prescription. But this was only the first part of the new vaccination skills of pharmacists. The last orders have just been published in the Official Journal. From now on, pharmacists will also be able prescribe certain vaccines.
What are the vaccines that the pharmacist can prescribe?
As specified in the decree signed by the new Minister of Health Aurélien Rousseau, pharmacists can now prescribe (and administer) “all the vaccines mentioned in the vaccination schedule in force in the people aged eleven and overwith the exception of live attenuated vaccines in immunocompromised persons”.
This includes the DTP (Diphtheria-Tetanus-Poliomyelitis) and pertussis vaccine, hepatitis B, HPV (papillomavirus), MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), meningococcal type C and shingles.
The decree published on August 8 also notifies that pharmacists are authorized to prescribe and administer seasonal flu vaccines to people aged 11 and over, “whether or not targeted by vaccination recommendations”.
>> Note that these authorizations to prescribe and administer vaccines have also been granted to midwives and nurses.
