The consumption of hydro-alcoholic products, a reflection of hand hygiene, has increased significantly. The percentage of establishments obtaining a good or very good rating in this area rose from 11% in 2006 to almost 25% in 2007.
Half of the establishments attach the required importance to the question of the proper use of antibiotics. Nearly 85% of facilities now monitor for surgical site infections. The propensity for good and very good establishments has thus doubled, now reaching 48%.
“162 establishments are still considered bad students, but there were 300 at the last assessment. The result is not satisfactory but it has been halved,” said Roselyne Bachelot.
The overall incidence of surgical site infections decreased by 38% between 1999 and 2006, and was 1.54% in 2006. At that date, the prevalence of patients was 4.9% in France, a decrease 12% compared to 2001. France is rather a good student compared to its neighbors in Europe, since the European results are between 4.9 and 8.5%
The nursing staff of nearly 99.5% of French healthcare establishments communicated their data to carry out this assessment. The purpose of communicating these results, according to the minister, is to offer citizens a “risk assessment and total transparency” on these infections contracted in a health establishment.
