Several active safety equipment will become mandatory on board new cars from 2022. We take stock of these devices, and the schedule for their gradual arrival until 2026.
The European regulation 2019/2144 adopted in January 2020, relating to road safety, is about to come into force in all the member states of the European Union. It includes the introduction of new compulsory equipment on board vehicles, in several stages. Active safety aids will multiply, such as the data recorded by our cars.

A car that watches over the exterior as well as the interior
With regard to the automobile, the new models must be equipped from July 6, 2022:
- an intelligent cruise control (which can act as a speed limiter, can be deactivated);
- an autonomous emergency braking system;
- an emergency braking light signal;
- a reverse obstacle detection system (camera or radar);
- a driver’s attention loss alert;
- a data recorder enabling the circumstances of a possible accident to be clarified;
- corrective aid for keeping in the lane
This last equipment will only be compulsory from July 7, 2024 for cars with hydraulic steering assistance. It is also on this date that the automatic emergency braking must be able to recognize pedestrians and cyclists. And it is also from July 7, 2024 that the design and construction of the cars will have to incorporate a larger area of head protection a vulnerable road user (pedestrian, cyclist, etc.) in the front in the event of an impact.
Two years delay for earlier models
As for new cars approved before the entry into force of these obligations for new models, they will have a period of two years to be brought into compliance with the regulation. For example, for a car marketed in 2021, only units registered for the first time from July 7, 2024 must be equipped with autonomous emergency braking.
