Lamborghini presents the Countach LPI 800-4 and thus reinvents its 1971 supercar, which is celebrating its 50 years. The coupe, based on the Sian, carries a micro-hybrid V12 of 814 hp and is only to be produced in 112 copies.
When Lamborghini announced that the Countach would be back for its 50th anniversary, one could wonder to what extent the supercar in question could more evoke its inspiration than the other current sports cars of the brand, as their design already follows that of the Countach. It was underestimating the designers of the brand with the bull, supervised by Mitja Borkert, who with the Countach LPI 800-4 reinvent this icon of the 1970s and 1980s for the XXIe century, that of electrification. Rest assured, the V12 is still in the game.
Design, a digest of Countach
To draw this new Countach, Lamborghini drew elements from different versions of the original model. The evocation is obvious from the front between the thin horizontal air intakes of the shield taken from the Quattrovalvole, the flared shape of the front cover or the almost rectangular optical units which are reminiscent of the Diablo. These integrate all light sources since retractable lights like those of the first Countach would not be compatible with the current homologation standards.
The sidewalls feature gills reminiscent of the LP 400 S and LP 500 S, while the upper rear part is hollowed out in the “periscopio” shape between uprights with multiple vents. So many nods to the car that adorned the teenage bedroom of a whole generation.
The absence of a fixed rear wing keeps the lines clean early iterations of the Countach; a finesse accentuated by the rear bumper fleeing upwards. The two round twin tailpipes are back, and the rims in ‘telephone’ design immediately evoke the 1970s and 1980s.
A finish with “eighties” accents
The car is presented in a white tint incorporating a touch of blue to recall Ferruccio Lamborghini’s personal Countach LP 400 S. Its interior is adorned with red and black leather upholstery. The central 8.4-inch touchscreen is unique to this model. By pressing the “Stile” button, you can find an explanation of the design philosophy of the Countach. The rear lights, if their three-part arrangement is reminiscent of certain classic Countachs, remain those of the Sian, which served as the technical basis for the newcomer.
An 814 hp micro-hybrid supercar
Like the Sian therefore, the new Countach has an atypical light hybridization mechanism. It is powered by an atmospheric 6.5 V12 of 780 hp (5 hp less than the Sian) and 720 Nm of torque capable of taking 8,700 rpm, associated with a small electric motor of 34 hp and 35 Nm itself integrated. transmission and capable of driving the wheels alone when maneuvering or reversing. This electro-motor is powered by a 48V supercapacitor offering three times more power than a lithium-ion battery of the same weight, according to Lamborghini. The electrical part of the powertrain thus weighs only 34 kg. The combined power is 814 hp, transmitted to all four wheels by a robotic seven-speed gearbox. The coupe officially weighs 1,595 kg dry, 57% of which is supported by the rear axle. The manufacturer announces a time of 2.8 s to go from 0 to 100 km / h, 8.6 s to reach 200 km / h and a top speed of 355 km / h.

The suffix of the Countach LPI 800-4 means that it has an engine in the rear longitudinal (central-) position, that it is hybrid, that it offers a power rounded off to 800 hp and that it has four-wheel drive. More than a tribute, it wants to be avant-garde as was the first Countach according to the firm of Sant’Agata Bolognese. ” The Countach LPI 800-4 is a visionary car of the moment, just like its predecessor. […] She imagines how the iconic Countach of the 1970s and 1980s could have evolved into an elite supersport model of that decade. Says Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Lamborghini. The supercar will be produced in 112 copies, in reference to the code name LP 112 which was that of the first Countach during its development. The price of the Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 has not been released; some sources suggest a price of around 3 million euros. The first deliveries are scheduled for the first quarter of 2022.
