With tips to keep the taste and vitamins
Good question! In this section, Health Net is looking for answers to frequently asked questions. This time: Is frozen fruit just as healthy as fresh fruit?
There is practically no difference between fresh fruit compared to frozen fruit. Frozen fruit contains practically as many nutrients as fresh fruit.
Vitamins and minerals
Fruits include vitamin C, vitamin A, folic acid, potassium, iron and calcium. The amounts of nutrients are different in each species, but even within the same species, differences can exist.
Did you buy too much fruit? You can also easily freeze fruit yourself. For freezing you can use ice cube trays, a plastic container or special freezer bags. Always make sure that it is packed airtight.
Tips to preserve the taste and vitamins:
- Freeze soft fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, currants in a plastic container or on a plate. Just make sure you only use a thin layer or they will freeze together.
- You can freeze grapes and strawberries whole. For example, you can use them frozen as ice cubes in drinks, but also thaw them and use them in yogurt or smoothie.
- Slice lemons and limes and freeze them in a container or freezer bag. You can put the slices in your water frozen or thawed, but also use them as a garnish with fish or meat, for example.
- Do you have too many bananas? You can freeze them whole, but also in slices or pieces. Do you want to use them for a smoothie or banana bread? Then it’s easier in small pieces. They do lose some flavor.
- Oranges and/or grapefruits can be frozen squeezed. Place the juice in an ice cube tray or plastic bottle and freeze.
