Not really. This is the ultimate electric ’80s retro dan
Retro EVs are super hip. It is easy to score, but for some brands a little easier than for others. For Renault, for example, it’s easy to bring the 5 back to life because the original was so iconic. Electrifying old Hyundais is a bit more difficult. Because although they produce excellent – and increasingly desirable – models these days, they do not look back on a rosy history. Yet they are now making a cool attempt with this Hyundai Heritage Series Grandeur.
For those who don’t know it: the original Grandeur is a sedan from the eighties that was essentially a Mitsubishi Debonair (another well-known model) with a new suit on. It was a flamboyantly depreciating four-door from the early to mid-1990s. Not very glamorous – and yet Hyundai decided to bring this very car back to life.
The Hyundai Heritage Series Grandeur is a strange mix
The end result feels like a mix between an eighties club night (check that ceiling!) and a gang car out GTA, with spare parts from a used Cadillac as a side dish. A strange recipe, but one that – at least to these eyes – seems to really work. The square lines of the original Grandeur have been retained and Hyundai installed new LED lamps. The screens in the interior seem to match the design surprisingly well and the recessed window knobs are also very neat.
The Grandeur could also have been the result of a Mercedes interior designer who went back in time but accidentally ended up in South Korea. You do not know. A production version of the Hyundai Heritage Series Grandeur will probably never come. Specifications of the powertrain are therefore unknown. We would rather like this car with the powertrain of the Kia EV6 GT.
