A little over a year after the Ioniq 5, a 100% electric SUV, the South Korean manufacturer unveils the rest of its program, the large Ioniq 6 sedan. Forget straight lines, 90° angles, Hyundai changes everything . The argus was able to slip inside this rival of the Tesla Model 3 and S.
At Hyundai, the Ioniq label is used to distinguish electric productions from the rest of the range. After the Ioniq 5 SUV, presented at the end of February 2021, the Ioniq 6 will be marketed by the end of 2022, before the arrival next year of a large Ioniq 7 SUV. Unlike many manufacturers who seek to infuse their productions an identifiable family resemblance at first glance, Hyundai gives each model its own character. This Ioniq 6 pushes the concept even further, becoming the antithesis of the Ioniq 5.

Daughter of Prophecy
Impossible for the Ioniq 6 to deny its affiliation with the Prophecy prototype, presented virtually in 2020 for lack of the Geneva Motor Show. The production version uses the codes and proportions of the concept. Between the first pencil stroke and this final version, only thirty-seven months will have passed. Note that this Ioniq 6 takes over the e-GMP platform, inaugurated on the Ioniq 5. Seen from the outside, it is difficult to guess, as this sedan sports an original style.

We are in the presence of a 4.85 m long sedan. This size, comparable to that of a Mercedes-Benz E-Class, is halfway between a Tesla Model 3 and a Model S. If the front end remains almost demure, volumes and profile surprise by adopting a style water drop. According to the designers themselves, this Ioniq 6 takes up the principles of the “Streamliner” design, a trend very popular in the 1930s on trains, before being popularized and declined in the automobile. The inspiration comes as much from the Saab 9.2 as from certain aircraft of the same period.

The Ioniq 6 receives Matrix LED projectors with intelligent lighting system.
The front is fitted with Matrix LED headlamps with an intelligent lighting system. To refine the vehicle’s efficiency, the South Korean manufacturer has equipped it with air flaps that open or close depending on speed and aerodynamic needs. At the end of the hood, we will notice a new logo following the trend of Flat Design. The sides are finely chiselled with contrasting moldings all around the body. Mirrors are replaced by cameras, and the door handles are flush, reinforcing the futuristic look of this Ioniq 6. The profile ends in a duck tail, but it’s probably the rear that will get the most ink flowing.

Full of pixels

Between this duck tail and the rear spoiler worthy of a Porsche 911 Turbo, it is difficult not to detect a Germanic inspiration in the design. However, the comparison stops there, because Hyundai designers like to play with pixels. This was already the case on the Ioniq 5, but this time they got loose. The rear lights with parametric pixels are back and form a unique light signature. Seen from the back, this Ioniq 6 looks like no other car with its wide band. A feeling reinforced by its singular third brake light, which adopts an unprecedented lighting mode, also based on dozens of pixels. This Ioniq 6 should not go unnoticed on the street, with a catalog offering no less than twelve different shades.

Inside, the sedan adopts the spirit of the Ioniq 5. We find the main lines of the dashboard of the SUV. The steering wheel is taken over while the driving information and the guidance system are still provided by two horizontal slabs of twelve inches each with a sleek design. But the main quality of this interior is to be credited to the habitability. With its giant wheelbase of 2.95 m, this Ioniq 6 offers plenty of legroom. An impression accentuated by the flat floor and the light colours. And, in order to reinforce this cocoon aspect, Hyundai opts for configurable double ambient lighting, speed-dependent lighting, relaxing seats in the front seats, but also “Zen” materials that respect their environment.

An environmentally friendly electric?

This 100% electric sedan indeed opts for eco-tanned leather, upholstery and roof fabric in recycled PET, a dashboard in biosourced materials, carpets woven with fishing nets or even paint made from used tires. A car well in its time, whose technical characteristics will be communicated later. Be aware, however, that it will probably take over the battery capacities and power levels of the Ioniq 5. Hyundai has not yet communicated on the engines soon to be offered. We will probably know more in July. Marketing will be effective in the last quarter of 2022.
