Certain movies and series on Netflix will support spatial audio on Netlfix starting today. The company does this in collaboration with Sennheiser.
Netflix converts the surround mixes of the programs into spatial audio, which should provide an immersive experience when you watch with headphones on or via stereo speakers.
You do not need to purchase new hardware for this; the speakers you have at home are probably ready for use. You also do not need an expensive subscription for this.
Netflix and Sennheiser join forces
At the time of writing, only a limited selection of content with spatial audio support is available. What can you expect in terms of offer?
In any case, you can watch series like Stranger Things and The Witcher with the new audio format, as well as the movie Red Notice. By searching for ‘spatial audio’ within the app, you will see the content.
If you already have a Dolby Atmos system at home, spatial audio probably does very little for you. After all, you already have a better alternative at your disposal.
Anyway, not everyone has (money for) such a system, so it’s good that Netflix in this kind of things invests. And it’s nice that it doesn’t cost subscribers anything extra at the moment.
