As Easter is fast approaching, you may be one of those who have already been shopping for their chocolates for several weeks. But for the latecomers, 60 Million consumers helps you make your choice. While the Easter holidays in 2022 were marked by the health scandal of chocolate eggs from the Kinder brand contaminated with salmonellosis, how not to take a risk while getting the best deals in 2023?
For this year will be marked by inflation (+10% on average for chocolate compared to March 2022), 60 Millions has decided to compare six packs of small eggs to hide (milk chocolate and praline) from brands Cémoi, Ferrero Rocher, Grand Confectioner, Kinder, Milka and Révillon.

Which are the cheapest? Small eggs from the Milka and Kinder brands turned out to be the cheapest. Conversely, the most expensive are those of the Grand Confiseur and Ferrero Rocher brands, with prices ranging from single to double. But does a higher price guarantee better quality? The answer is (unsurprisingly) no, all the references in the sample have one thing in common: their very high sugar content, to the point that this ingredient comes first for many products. Good surprise nevertheless: no manufacturer uses glucose syrup, “lower quality”according to the consumer association.
Too little cocoa and praline in mini eggs
In addition to being relatively sweet (unless you opt for a dark chocolate version), the mini eggs in the selection actually contain little cocoa. To talk about chocolate candies, they must contain at least 25% chocolate: only Cémoi eggs mention “Milk chocolate: 26% cocoa minimum“.
Ditto for the praline content: whereas in confectionery, the praline must be composed of a mixture of hazelnuts and almonds, only Révillon chocolates offer this mixture. The proportion of praline sometimes even varies from simple to triple. In first position come the Grand Confiseur eggs, followed by those of Milka, where the praline comes in second position of the ingredients after the sugar.
Unfortunately, some contain unwanted ingredients, including artificial flavors and additives like lechitin, which is used to homogenize chocolate. Palm oil has also been found almost everywhere: authorized up to 5% in chocolate and less expensive than cocoa butter, it allows manufacturers to save money, despite its harmful consequences on health and environment.
