Up to 4 years old, it is normal for the notion of past and future to be difficult to understand.
In the first years of his life, the child lives in the present and finds it difficult to think about what happened before or what will happen after. Starting to talk about the weather little by little will allow him to become familiar with these notions.
How to talk about the weather to your child before 4 years old?
If the words “yesterday”, “morning”, “tomorrow” or “in a week” are still very abstract for him, you can encourage him by integrating the notion of time when you talk to him so that he becomes familiar with the important times of the day. From the age of 3, teach him the notions of “before” and “after” by encouraging him to do things in a particular order, such as “washing his hands then eating”, or “putting on his pajamas then brush your teeth.
Around the age of 4, he begins to better understand the times of the day and even the days of the week. To help him better integrate this notion of time, you can use a calendar to remember when an event has taken place, or will take place: “you’re going to your cousin’s in two sleeps”, “you saw your grandpa yesterday “. At this age, however, it is best not to ask him to project himself into lapses of more than a few days in the past or the future.
After 4 years how to help him learn the notion of time?
When he starts to better fit into his day, you can use the game to encourage him to tell his routine according to the moments. Using pictures can be helpful to better visualize the sequence of events.
After 4 years, it is also the age to teach him the seasons and invite him to better situate himself throughout the year by making for example a collage with the activities according to the months. If he is interested, you can also make a schedule of the week together where you stick to it or draw each activity to help him situate himself and set up habits.
