A new study from the University of Texas (USA) published online on the Journal of occupational and environmental medicine comes to call workaholics or workaholics to order. After reviewing the medical records of more than 1,900 people aged 18 and over between 1986 and 2011 and looking for a link between working hours and cardiovascular illnessesthey found that long working days wreak havoc on heart health.
On average, study participants who worked full time worked 45 hours per week. And 43% of them were diagnosed with a cardiovascular disease such as angina pectoris, coronary artery damage or high blood pressure where had has a heart attack Where stroke. And this risk of coronary heart disease appears to increase by 1% for each additional hour of work per week worked for at least ten years.
“But from 46 hours of work per week, the risk increases even more. It is 16% higher from 55 hours per week and 35% higher when working 60 hours per week” explains Sadie Conway, from the University of Science in Houston (USA) and lead author of the study.
Long working days are not the only ones that have an impact on our heart health. Other studies have also shown that lack of sleepincreased the risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease, as well as a sedentary lifestyle.
