April 18, 2011 – Quebecers are invited to celebrate Earth Day on Friday April 22. A celebration whose mission is to invite young and old to mobilize and take positive actions for the environment.
One of the actions proposed by the organizers is to opt for public transport on Friday in order to reduce our impact on the environment. Thus, like last year, 100,000 passes for unlimited use in public transport services in Quebec are offered free of charge on the Internet, as part of the With a Friend campaign.1.
“Everyone recognizes the importance of taking care of the Earth. The planet is in a dramatic state and one of the ways of doing our part as an individual is to favor the bus and the metro to reduce pollution and its impact on health ”, explains actress Édith Cochrane, spokesperson for the campaign With a friend.
“It’s a simple, easy and economical way to get around. This day is a good opportunity to learn about public transport for people who normally travel alone by car, ”she adds.
A host of activities
A host of other activities take place throughout the month of April. More than 50 museum, cultural and educational institutions organize workshops, conferences, exhibitions and other pro-environmental activities in 30 cities in 12 regions of Quebec.
Notice to interested parties, the Espace biodiversity competition2 continues until Friday. It offers knowledge tests on this year’s theme, biodiversity. Participation in the 5 online questionnaires makes you eligible for prizes totaling nearly $ 20,000.
Born from an American initiative on April 22, 1970, Earth Day has been celebrated on the same day every year in Quebec since 1995. More than 500 million people from 184 countries celebrate Earth Day each year, which makes the most important participatory environmental movement on the planet.
