Strawberries are an extremely interesting fruit, both for health and for the figure. Very low in calories (with only 39 Kcal per 100 g) and with a pleasant sweet flavor, it is a good substitute for cakes, candies and other snack pastries. Rich in antioxidants (mainly flavonoids and phenolic acids) as well as vitamin C and vitamin B9, it also has proven anti-inflammatory effects. In short, strawberries are good for us!
Exactly: a new study, carried out by the University of Cincinnati (in the United States), has just discovered an additional good reason to eat strawberries as often as possible. American researchers claim that from the age of 50, eating a bowl of strawberries every day would reduce the signs of cognitive decline.
To reach this conclusion, scientists brought together 30 volunteers, overweight men and women aged 50 to 65. These were divided into two groups: for 12 weeks, participants in group 1 received 100 g of strawberries in powder form every day to take for breakfast. The participants in group 2, for their part, were only given a placebo.
A bowl of strawberries every morning for breakfast… even in winter!
Result ? At the end of the experiment, the volunteers in group 1 obtained better results on memory tests than those in group 2. Their mood was also better, as were the results of their blood tests.
How to explain it? “Strawberries, like blueberries, contain anthocyanins: these antioxidants have been associated with improved metabolic and cognitive health in humans.” note the researchers. They also point out that certain polyphenols contained in strawberries (ellagitannins) also have proven health benefits.
Adding a handful of strawberries to your breakfast (in the form of a smoothie, juice or simply fresh fruit) is a great idea. But what to do in the middle of winter, when it’s no longer the season at all? The answer is in one word: freezing. Frozen strawberries will keep for several months; they are then prepared in coulis, compote or in a cake.
