This Thursday, October 15, a curious announcement appeared on the virtual auction site Ebay: while we are used to seeing cars, clothes or kitchen utensils, a mother decided to sell … his left kidney.
The price ? € 20,000. Isabelle, mother of 2 children and long-term unemployed, claims to be “in good health, with medical analyzes to support it”. She adds: “all medical and transportation costs for the graft will be charged to the buyer and to be added to the final auction price ”. A shocking announcement, but which is also illegal: indeed, in France, the sale of organs has been prohibited since 1976 … For those who risk it anyway, the penalty is 7 years in prison and 100,000 € fine.
Ironically, Isabelle wants to “hand-deliver the product only” and “refuse returns”. As for the “object”, it shows “some signs of superficial wear”. To date, no one has wanted to bid on their offer.
Phew: finally the announcement was revealed is a communication operation, led by the association France ADOT (federation of associations for the donation of organs and human tissues). The goal? Raise public awareness of the issue of organ donation. In fact, every year, 220 people die for lack of graft. And right now, 20,000 people are waiting. A beautiful operation, which hits the mark for World Organ Donation Day!
