The link between glyoxylic acid, used in hair straightening products, and acute renal failure is confirmed by ANSES which therefore maintains its warning.
- ANSES confirms that glyoxylic acid, used in hair straightening products, can cause acute renal failure.
- She reached this conclusion after examining the scientific data available on the toxicity of this substance.
- The agency requests a restriction or even a ban on the use of this substance in hair care products.
In view of the scientific data collected, doubt is no longer possible, according to the National Agency for Food, Environment and Labor (ANSES). Glyoxylic acid, used in Brazilian straightenings, can cause acute renal failure to its users.
In his Communiqué of January 23, 2025the organization requires taking regulatory measures and advising the use of smoothing products.
Glyoxylic acid: the link with confirmed renal failure
“After analyzing the available scientific data, the agency confirms that glyoxylic acid is most likely the cause of acute kidney failure”warns ANSES. Faced with this observation, it requires the realization of an assessment of the risk of the chemical substance “In order to rule, within the framework of the European Cosmetics Regulation, on a restriction, even a ban on the use of this substance in hair care products”.
In addition, the organization would like the evaluation to be extended to the different derivatives of glyoxylic acid used for smoothing. While waiting for the authorities to seize the file, ANSES recommends that consumers avoid the use of skillful smoothing products containing the incriminated substance. He also asks “Market directors to re -examine the safety of products that contain glyoxylic acid and the adequacy of precautions contributing to safe use”.
Kidney failure and smoothing product: 4 new cases since October
ANSES looked at the chemical substance after the reporting of several cases of acute renal failure according to the use of a smoothing product. And without waiting for the finalization of her investigation, she had called users for vigilance.
“Since the alert launched in October 2024, four new cases have been declared to the national cosmetvigilance system. Knowledge of this risk has allowed doctors taking care of these patients to make the link between acute kidney failure without apparent cause and the Realization of a Brazilian smoothing “specifies the organization.
In cases reported to the authorities, signs of kidney failure manifested themselves in the hours after exposure to the product containing glyoxylic acid, or even during its use. Symptoms are:
- abdominal or lumbar pain;
- nausea;
- and/or vomiting.
In the event of symptoms, it is recommended to consult a doctor quickly or to call an anti -poison center.
