This Saturday, May 19, 2018, is World Chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease Day (IBD). Behind this acronym, we find mainly Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis (UC), two pathologies that affect 6 million patients worldwide and 3 million in Europe: these are characterized by inflammation of the wall of part of the digestive tract, a source of more or less severe lesions.
In 2018, the AFA association puts physical activity in the spotlight with a slogan: “Crohn’s & RCH, move faster than disease!” “. Throughout the day, sports events (in particular carried by sports and dance clubs) will be organized throughout France to raise public awareness of these diseases which unfortunately remain incurable.
Because, it’s proven, physical activity is the enemy of IBD: thus, according to an American study published in November 2013, women practice 9 hours of walking per week at an average pace, reducing by about 44% their risk of developing Crohn’s disease compared to sedentary people.
May 19, all in purple!
In addition, according to some international studies, the practice of a gentle but regular physical activity (walking, swimming, yoga …) can also improve the daily life of patients suffering from chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
Good to know: purple is the color that symbolizes the fight of patients against Crohn’s disease and UC. This May 19, 2018, we can therefore support associations fighting against IBD by posting selfies or photos of groups dressed in purple on social networks with the hashtag #WorldIBDday.
