September 29, 2004 – Certain vitamin and mineral supplements may help curb weight gain in people over 45, even when they are already overweight, according to an epidemiological study of 15,000 people in the region. Washington state.
Participants taking multivitamins, vitamins B6 and B12, and chromium had the least weight gain over a ten-year period. What is more, this brake on being overweight was most strongly marked in people already suffering from overweight or even obesity.
A questionnaire was used to establish this unsuspected link between vitamins and being overweight. With an average age of 55, participants provided extensive information about their eating habits, physical activity, and intake of vitamin supplements. In addition to the supplements already mentioned, researchers also looked at the consumption of soy, ginkgo, St. John’s wort and omega-3 fatty acids supplements.
The authors recognize that some vitamin supplements can have an effect on the amount of food consumed by those who use them. For example, chromium helps regulate glucose levels in diabetics, which usually leads to less food.
The results of this research were presented a few days ago at the annual meeting of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians in Seattle. The researchers hope that a clinical study can more clearly identify how supplements affect weight.
