We already knew that junk food (understand: hamburgers, fries, nuggets, pizzas …) was bad for health: in bulk, it is accused of promoting obesity, asthma in teens , poor school results, certain hormonal imbalances, fertility disorders in men, constipation … In short, to be avoided!
But according to a new study conducted jointly by researchers at Brigham Young University (in the United States) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (in China), stress could have the same negative impact as a diet that is too fat, too much. sweet and too salty on the gut microbiota.
To reach this conclusion, the researchers carried out several experiments on a group of mice, aged 8 weeks on average: half of them were subjected to a “fast-food” type diet for several weeks. During the same period, the other half, meanwhile, were under intense stress. The intestinal flora of the rodents was then analyzed via their stool.
Are women more sensitive to stress than men?
Verdict? The researchers found that, in female mice, in particular, stress caused the same changes in gut flora as a diet that was too fatty, too sweet, and too salty.
“Although this work was carried out on mice, we believe that certain conclusions are also valid for humans, analyze the scientists, who published their work in the specialized journal Scientific Reports. Thus, stress is not only psychological: we know that it can have concrete repercussions on the state of health of the person. Regarding the male / female difference, it also seems credible on a human scale since women are, on average, more affected than men by depression and anxiety disorders. “
