You can easily buy medicines that are only available on prescription on the internet. This is according to a survey by the Consumers’ Association. This concerns, for example, slimming pills, antibiotics, sleeping pills and tranquilizers and cancer medicines.
In the Netherlands it is illegal to buy prescription medicines without a doctor’s prescription. There is no guarantee that the medicines are of good quality and whether they are genuine. Pills can also be damaged during the ordering and delivery process and therefore release the active ingredient too quickly. It is also important that a doctor determines whether the drug is suitable for the patient.
Cheap
Nevertheless, medicines appear to be popular with internet traders. They are many times cheaper than at a regular pharmacy. In addition, many pharmacies have been struggling with a drug shortage for years, which means that patients sometimes cannot get the right medication. Switching to another, similar drug often brings unwanted effects. Buying the medicine on the internet turns out to be an easy solution.
Criminologist Rosa Koenraadt previously stated in NRC that people also buy medicines online ‘out of convenience and shame’. For example, erection pills appear to be popular, while medical advice is actually required for this.
