Alcohol and tobacco consumption has dropped dramatically in Russia for 10 years. It was during the Gaidar Forum, taking place at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, that Minister of Health Veronila Skvortsova highlighted the progress of this country. “We have succeeded in reducing the alcohol consumption per inhabitant. At the same time, the number of people practicing sport has increased by 40%, ”relays the Russian newspaper Kommersant. “In 5 years, we have been able to reduce the consumption of tobacco in adults and to divide by three that of minors. “
More and more restrictions
For 10 years an increasingly restrictive policy has been put in place: no sale of alcohol after 11 p.m., establishment of a minimum price, limitation of tobacco in public places and ban on advertising. And it works ! According to WHO, Russians now drink 12.2 liters of alcohol consumed per year per person. This is lower than the consumption of the French (13.3 liters), the Portuguese (12.6) or even the Germans (13.4).
In 1990, their per capita alcohol consumption was below 12 liters. But after the fall of the USSR, a health crisis hit the country causing a drop in life expectancy and a reduction in the population. Linked to this, their alcohol consumption increased considerably until 2007. This curve has now been reversed and Russia does not intend to stop there. The Legislative Assembly is soon to consider a bill to ban the sale of alcohol in stores located near homes.
