Lauren Thayer, nurse, and Krutika Nanavati, dietitian, spoke about the benefits of berries, which they recommend eating for breakfast every day. They would be beneficial for memory ! Blueberries are rich in anthocyanins, recalls the nurse, which she describes as having anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. However, stress, like inflammation, are factors in cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases. Eating blueberries would therefore help fight against it.
A 2017 study already highlighted the benefits of blueberries on the brain, after a 12-week examination of volunteers who had consumed 30ml of concentrated blueberry juice. A before and after MRI showed that certain areas of the brain saw their activity increase under the presumed effect of these juices. One of the doctors in the study then commented: “In this studywe showed that with just 12 weeks of daily consumption of 30ml of blueberry juice concentrate, brain blood flow, brain activation and certain aspects of working memory were improved.
Good for the brain, but not only
They are also known to be beneficial for the eyes, and in particular for the blood network of the retina. And that’s not all: blueberries help fight against the oxidation of our cells, and therefore their aging. Due to their richness in water and fiber, they are also very good allies of the digestive system.
They can be eaten fresh or dried, or even frozen. The recommended amount is 100 to 200 grams of fresh fruit or 2 to 4 teaspoons if dried. We do not recommend eating them in a dairy product which can reduce their antioxidant benefits. So, if you want them in yogurt, opt for plant-based!
