Porsche officially announces a 718 Cayman GT4 RS. This radical variant of the small coupe has just achieved a great time at the Nürburgring thanks to particularly sharp engine, chassis and aerodynamics settings. Its presentation is scheduled for November 2021.
Porsche has been testing a 718 Cayman GT4 RS on the road and on the circuit for two years now. This extreme variation of the small coupe has been seen several times on the side of the Nürburgring but its official announcement was long overdue. The German manufacturer today formalizes the development of this unique variant, which promises to be particularly effective.
The little Porsche that is almost familiar with supercars
As is often the case, it is through a demonstration of the vehicle’s capabilities on the Nordschleife (north loop) of the Nürburgring that Porsche announces its upcoming launch. In the hands of the German Jörg Bergmeister, the car completed a lap in 7’09.300 over the 20.832 km of the complete circuit used as a reference since 2019. Of the 20.6 km previously taken into account, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS was clocked in 7.04’511.
- 23.6 s less than the “short” Cayman GT4 of 420 hp,
- 8.2 s better than the 911 GT3 RS type 991.2 with 500 hp,
- and even 0.1 s faster than the 585 hp Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro.
Almost a racing car
To further improve the performance of the 718 Cayman compared to the GT4 version, Porsche has notably reworked the aerodynamics. On the lightly camouflaged production copy of the Nürburgring, we notice in particular two air intakes on the front cover of the gills in place of the rear quarter windows, as well as a more imposing rear spoiler. The manufacturer is still stingy in details on the engine, but its tone confirms that it is indeed an naturally aspirated flat-six. This could develop at least 450 hp. The best time on the Nordschleife was achieved with a PDK dual-clutch gearbox. This 718 being an RS model, the first of the line started with the Boxster in 1996, it could be the only transmission offered.
Presentation in Los Angeles in November
The Ring car was also fitted with optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires and a racing bucket seat. Porsche nevertheless promises that ” the weight of the car and the conformity to the technical characteristics of the production models have been certified by a bailiff “. The full model presentation is announced for next month; her first public appearance is expected at the 2021 Los Angeles show which will open its doors on November 19.
