The saga of Peugeot city cars began fifty years ago. From the 104, the first of its kind in 1972, to the youngest 208 via the mythical 205, everyone has seen at least one model from the manufacturer to the lion. L’argus invites you to rediscover them through a retrospective.
In 1972, Peugeot released its first city car: the 104. Fifty years later and after ten models, the latest representative of the line is called the 208. In total, more than 25 million lion city cars were produced. A look at an anniversary saga that marked the generations.

From the series of 100…
In cars, there are two types of city cars: those cut for the city and those much more versatile. At Peugeot, the first category corresponds to models with the name “100”, of which the first representative was the 104, which appeared in 1972. This is the eldest of the city cars of the Lion. The difference between the two families will become truly noticeable from the 107, launched in 2005. During its adventure in the urban vehicle segment, Peugeot will explore an atypical path with the 1007, characterized by its famous electric sliding doors. The 108 having disappeared from the catalog in 2021, Peugeot has drawn a line under the 100 series and only counts on the 200 series to ensure its presence among city cars.
… to that of 200
The Peugeot 200 line is one of the most emblematic. The 201, 202, 203 and 204 cannot be considered city cars of the contemporary era, but rather, by their traditional silhouettes, as popular entry-level sedans. In this series, it is therefore, in 1983, that a small lioness answering to the name of 205 introduced the concept of a versatile sedan. A true icon of the French automobile, the 205 was declined in all sauces, including the famous GTI version. It will be replaced by the 206 in 1998. With more than 8 million copies produced until 201, it is the best-selling car of all time in France, surpassing the Renault 4 in this respect. A colossal success that the 207 with 2.5 million units will not equal.
To end the saga, the Peugeot 208 (internal code A9) appeared in 2012. The versatile city car got a makeover with a new interior inaugurating the i-Cockpit and restored the shine to the 200 series. Less than a decade later , a second generation (project P21) with sharp fangs arrives on the market. It is now based on the new CMP platform of the PSA group, which allows the 208 II to be available in 100% electric: the Peugeot e-208.
