A specialist in 4 x 4 transformation, Dangel offers a version of the Peugeot Expert that offers the same payload performance as a classic model but with crossing capabilities worthy of a real off-roader.
For more than forty years, the French company Dangel has been transforming Peugeot models into 4 x 4s (and now also vehicles from other brands associated with the Stellantis group). The developer designs its own transmissions and adapts them to vehicles in its Alsatian factory. If the brand has forged a solid reputation with the indestructible Peugeot 504, it builds (the brand appears on the gray card) 4 x 4s based on the K9 (Berlingo, Partner, Combo and Proace City), K0 (Jumpy , Expert, Vivaro, Proace and Scudo) and X250 (Jumper, Boxer, Movano and soon Ducato).
Our test model is a Peugeot Expert 2.0 BlueHDi 145 BVM6 in the long version. The Dangel transformation is only available with this engine, the 4 x 4 transmission is not currently compatible with the 180 hp automatic gearbox or with the 1.5 BlueHDi 120 engine. However, it is possible to choose any version of the 145 hp Expert as the base, both in terms of its length and its trim levels. The change is noticeable by increased ground clearance, but also by the presence of the spare wheel in the load space, the rear axle no longer allowing it to be fitted under the vehicle.
Dangel Expert Award
At Dangel, there is two transformation levels: Trek and 4 x 4. The first improves the vehicle’s off-road skills thanks to a limited-slip differential on the front axle, engine and gearbox protection, as well as an increase in ground clearance (+ 20 mm). ). The second proposal, the one that equips our test vehicle, adopts a real all-wheel drive offering significantly higher crossing capacities thanks to the rear axle. It also includes a tank cover.
Performance can even be enhanced with the choice of an additional ground clearance raiser (40 mm more) and rear differential lock; options that were on our van the day of the test. Add to that a hitch, and the visit of the Expert to Dangel costs €9,295 excluding tax in this almost maximum configuration, to be added to the price of the base vehicle, i.e. €33,150 excluding tax.
Driving
The Dangel Expert retains the qualities of the original model. The driving position is close to that of a car and allows driving in excellent conditions. The suspensions perfectly absorb the irregularities of the road. Significantly, the suspension raise does not disturb the behavior of the transformed version, which remains imperial on the road. The 145 hp 2.0 BlueHDi engine offers great performance thanks to the high power but also and above all thanks to the torque offered. The gearbox control is precise, even if the highest gears prove to be a little too long in order to favor fuel consumption.
The additional weight of the transmission is not felt at the wheel and transmission noises are imperceptible, proof of the know-how of the Alsatian manufacturer in this area. On the road, the Dangel does as well as a standard Peugeot. However, the transformation only makes sense on slippery surfaces or when the driver wants to venture off the beaten track. Then just select the 4 x 4 mode via the button located to the left of the steering wheel to engage the all-wheel drive. From then on, it becomes possible to pass everywhere or almost as the crossing capacities are high. They are only hampered by the tires, but also – in the case of our long version – by the rear overhang or the more limited ventral angle than on a standard bodywork.
In dirt, sand or mud, the Expert demonstrates formidable efficiency without losing any of its carrying capacity since the usable volume is identical (apart from the presence of the spare wheel), just like the payload. Despite the absence of a short range, the all-wheel drive and the rear differential lock allow you to pass in unsuspected places. To note that ESP is specific to Dangel models and that it allows more skidding when crossing to ensure the traction that is sometimes necessary. Professionals who have to drive off-road will appreciate the performance of their bike, but also the ability of this Expert to preserve the comfort of its occupants.

Competetion
The first competitors of the Dangel Expert 4 x 4 are, of course, the other models of the Stellantis group available with all-wheel drive from the Alsatian manufacturer: Citroën Jumpy, Opel Vivaro and Toyota Proace. While performance is the same, equipment allowances and discount policies may vary from brand to brand. Apart from Stellantis, the opponents are to be found on the side of the German manufacturers with the Volkswagen T6.1 4Motion and the Vito 4 x 4. The first is available equipped with the 2.0 l TDi 150 engine with DSG7 gearbox from €41,570 excluding tax.
At Mercedes, the Vito 4 x 4 is available in three lengths. Its 2.0 l engine offers three power levels (136, 163 and 190 hp) and is combined with the excellent 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox. The starred van is available from €36,010 excl. VAT in the short version, €36,795 excl. VAT in the long version and €37,570 excl. VAT in the extra-long version.
