To reduce its CO2 emissions, the Peugeot 3008 has bet everything on the rechargeable hybrid. But before the arrival of its successor in 2024, the Lion’s SUV will adopt less expensive 48V light hybridization technology, with an unprecedented Punch Powertrain electrified dual-clutch gearbox.
If you want the hybrid at Peugeot, you have no choice today: you will also have to accept a large battery and mains charging. If this technological choice benefits CO emissions2, it is necessarily accompanied by very high prices. Without necessarily being suitable for all users, since it is essential to be able to connect regularly to optimize consumption. But the Lion has been preparing for a few years a much more affordable and less restrictive alternative, in collaboration with the equipment manufacturer Punch Powertrain. As part of a joint venture, the two partners are developing a light hybridization, which will go into production in early 2023. A solution that could finally land first on the current Peugeot 3008.
Short runs in 100% electric
Prototypes based on this compact SUV have been photographed, with a sticker to warn the emergency services of the presence of a 0.9 kWh battery. If this capacity is far from the useful 10.8 kWh of the rechargeable version, it remains sufficient to ensure brief runs in 100% electric. This is one of the specificities of the solution on which Peugeot is working compared to almost all of the mild hybrids on the market… apart from those that Jeep, Fiat and Alfa Romeo have recently been offering. But the creation of the Stellantis group is still too recent for there to have been synergies. Rather than the fairly classic Getrag double-clutch gearbox used by these three brands, the Peugeot MHEVs will thus use a more original automatic transmission, designed by Punch Powertrain and dubbed DT2 internally. Although it has two clutches, it will not allow pre-selecting gears to reduce gearshift time. A shortcoming that Peugeot will seek to compensate by operating the small electric motor when the torque breaks in order to erase it.
Last evolution before replacement
Associated with the three-cylinder turbo-petrol 1.2 Puretech, this improved light hybridization arrives particularly late in the career of the 3008. Its third generation, known under the code name P64, was initially expected for the end of 2023. But it could be a little late. The arrival of an MHEV version in 2023 will therefore help the current model to better negotiate its end of career., especially against a fairly ambitious Renault Austral. While reducing CO emissions2 Peugeot’s averages, a crucial point as the brand faces heavy fines if it does not meet the targets set for it by the European Union. Other models will also adopt this transmission in 2023 during their restyling (208, 2008, 508 and Rifter). Ditto at Citroën, DS and Opel.
