MONTREAL (PasseportSanté.net), November 6, 2003 – Barely 5% of the Quebec population knows how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers. However, the intervention of a rescuer within minutes of cardiac arrest increases the victim’s chances of survival by about 30%.
In addition, seven out of ten cardiac arrests occur in the presence of loved ones, and half of the victims die before reaching the hospital.
November being cardiopulmonary resuscitation month, the Quebec Heart and Stroke Foundation (FMCQ)1 take this opportunity to encourage people to familiarize themselves with the concepts that could help them save lives. In particular, an online CPR course has been developed.
“We want to make people’s mouths water and encourage them to register for a course in due form,” explains FMCQ general manager Jean Noël. But we also want to give them a minimum of means to intervene in case of need ”.
This course covers2 essentially the theoretical aspect of resuscitation and cardiorespiratory problems, and does not aim to train experienced rescuers. People who have taken the online training will therefore also need to contact a certified instructor in order to undergo a short practical exam, if they want to obtain a formal certificate from the FMCQ.
