The Pedagogical 2 Series is larger and comes as PHEV
Well, that’s pretty easy, isn’t it? Well, the grille is still prominent, but the overall picture of the new BMW 2-series Active Tourer (and no, you can’t buy a Passive Tourer) is just right. And while the family version of the 2-series may not strike the right chord with enthusiasts of the brand, the small MPV has been a modest hit for BMW. Since 2014, the brand has sold more than 430,000 units and 80 percent of buyers were new customers for the brand.
Compared to the old one, the new BMW 2-series Active Tourer is a bit bigger, so that the luggage space increases (+90 litres) and people in the back and front are more spacious. In addition, the dashboard has become a lot more modern with the curved display from the BMW iX. The ‘curved display’ consists of a 10.25 and a 10.7 inch, which run into each other. The graphics should be similar to those of a smartphone. Furthermore, there are few physical buttons in the interior.
Engines of the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer
For starters, all versions are equipped with a seven-speed automatic transmission. For the Netherlands there is only one diesel and that is the 218d with 150 hp and front-wheel drive. The range of petrol engines starts with the 218i with 136 hp. Then there are the 220i and 223i which have 170 and 218 horsepower respectively. These two both get a small electric motor that produces 19 horsepower and runs on 48 volts. So these are mild hybrids.
Plug-in hybrid variants
From 2022 there will be two PHEVs of the new BMW 2-series Active Tourer. The exact specifications such as the power or 0-100 times, BMW does not reveal yet. However, they can drive 80 kilometers fully electrically. We also see in the footnote (and in the photos) of the press release the name ‘230e xDrive’, so at least one of the plug-in hybrids gets four-wheel drive.
An interior camera
Under the category ‘we get the idea but it is a bit creepy’ we find an interior camera. This ‘allows to take pictures on the road and send them to the driver’s smartphone’. Very nice during a family holiday, but otherwise it is a bit stalky. The navigation uses Augmented Reality and the system is said to be ‘cloud data based’. The prices of the new MPV will follow later.
