Microsoft is releasing an update for testers this week that makes the operating system somewhat more environmentally friendly thanks to a specific option.
As of this week, Windows 11 testers can use a download new build for their operating system. The update is available through the Dev channel. When you get the update, you can make Windows a little more environmentally friendly than it is now by running Windows Updates at specific times.
Windows 11 updates and the environment
Windows 11 updates computer systems, such as desktops or laptops that are plugged in, when clean or green energy is available. The update is performed in the background when, for example, more solar or wind energy is available in a day.
For this, the system takes into account data originating from Electricity map or Watt time† It is not clear how much power Microsoft wants to save with this. If you don’t like this idea, you can still perform the update whenever you want.
Windows 11 Insider Build 22567 also offers some other options. For example, the management of your Microsoft 365 subscription should become more accessible within the Settings application. This way you can clearly see what the benefits of such a subscription are, as well as all the details regarding the payments.
Furthermore, the Open With menu, which opens a file with a different program than usual, has now been adjusted and follows the design guidelines of Windows 11. And Smart App Control is a brand new security option that aims to provide enhanced protection against apps that the computer doesn’t trust. It is not yet clear whether Microsoft will roll out all these options to all users; time will tell.
