Advertising in Windows 11 itself? That is a trick that Microsoft should not come up with, as it soon became clear.
This weekend the internet was turned upside down because of a questionable action by Microsoft† The Insider Preview version of Windows 11 contained advertising in the Explorer. Users were outraged that the company was advertising its own services in an operating system screen. Now the company is quickly looking for cover.
Advertising in Windows 11 Explorer was a mistake
The indignation was great, but Microsoft’s explanation was small; in a statement opposite The Verge the company says that an advertising banner was accidentally seen in the Explorer.
This was an experimental banner and was not intended to be published to external users. The function is turned off again.
In the tech world, there are two general philosophies when it comes to correcting mistakes. One is to make a public statement with an apology. The other is to claim that it was not the intention, but rather someone else’s mistake. Microsoft clearly opts for the latter.
Why am I insinuating it’s bullshit? Because Microsoft wasn’t the first time to hide advertising in an operating system. Previously, similar banners were shown in the Explorer of Windows 10. So it could just be that Microsoft dipped a paw in the water to see how it would be responded to.
Not good, is the conclusion. Get rid of this pointless feature and stay away!
