Microsoft has announced that Windows 11’s File Explorer will “soon” have access to tabs. With that, the bullet is officially through the church.
It became clear a few weeks ago that Microsoft is working on this functionality for Windows 11, because it appeared in a test version of the operating system. However, at the time, the Redmond-based company made no official mention of it.
But that has now changed, Microsoft announced during a event that focuses on hybrid work.
Explorer Windows 11 on the shovel
The Explorer of Windows 11 is therefore on the shovel. The tabs make it possible to open multiple folders in one Explorer window. This isn’t the first time Microsoft has tried this, by the way. Years ago, the software giant also worked on this project, back then for Windows 10. However, the feature, called Sets, was never released.

In addition, the Explorer gets a landing page with shortcuts to typical Quick Access folders. You will also see recently modified documents, as well as your favorites. Furthermore, additional sharing options are coming, which should make it easier to share files with contacts via Microsoft Teams, OneDrive and Outlook.
At the time of writing, it is unfortunately not yet clear when the new options will arrive. Microsoft is now testing the changes publicly, but has not yet given a release date.
