We knew that licorice was not recommended during pregnancy due to its in utero effects on the cognitive development of babies, a new study of the Medicines Agency (FDA) points out that licorice candy consumed regularly can cause heart problems in people over 40 years of age. The FDA has in fact collected the testimonies of several consumers of this type of candy who have developed cardiac arrhythmia or a arterial hypertension.
Licorice lowers potassium levels
FDA experts explain that black licorice contains glycyrrhizic acid, the sweetening compound derived from licorice root. This active principle can make lower potassium levels in the body. When this happens, some people experience an abnormal heart rhythm, others experience high blood pressure, edema (swelling), or congestive heart failure.
The FDA therefore advises:
-
Regardless of your age, don’t eat large amounts of black licorice.
If you have eaten a lot of black licorice and find that your heartbeat is irregular or you have muscle weakness, stop eating it immediately and contact your doctor.
Black licorice can interact with certain medications, plants and food supplements. Consult a healthcare practitioner if you have any questions about possible interactions with any drug or supplement you are taking.
Note, for people who take liquorice for heartburn, that there is deglycyrrhized liquorice powder, which prevents potassium drops.
