We know that coffee (and more precisely caffeine) has a slight fat-burning effect. A new study, published by researchers at Boston University (United States) confirms what we already knew: adding an extra cup of coffee to your diet when you are trying to lose weight can accelerate this loss. weight. Provided, of course, that you don’t add two or three sugars to your cup of coffee!
Just one more cup of coffee
For this study, American researchers studied three large health cohorts including more than 150,000 people, over four years. And they focused on the relationship between coffee drinking habits and changes in the study participants’ weight. They found that adding an extra cup of coffee to your daily diet was associated with a slight additional weight loss. A much more obvious effect in young or overweight people. On the other hand, these beneficial effects are completely canceled as soon as sugar is added to the cup of coffee since this adds additional calories.
Why such a beneficial effect? Certainly, caffeine encourages our body to consume more energy. But drinking an extra cup of coffee also increases fluid intake and therefore improves the feeling of fullness, which can lead to an overall reduction in calories consumed throughout the day.
However, don’t start drinking a cup of coffee every hour: “drinking 2 to 3 coffees daily is very interesting, but beyond 5 cups, you risk negative effects such as palpitations and hypertension” recalls nutritionist Juliette Bentz-Farman.
